Training Questions

Why is training so important?

There are many reasons why you should train your dog:

  1. You will build a closer bond with your dog.

  2. It will help you to understand your dog's body language.

  3. Your dog will become a well mannered member of society.  This is very important in this day and age when anti-dog feeling/breed discrimination is increasing in the community.

  4. Your dog will be a pleasure to live with.

  5. Learning tricks will help exercise your dog's brain, which can be as tiring as taking him for a walk.

  6. You will be able to take your dog to any dog friendly places.

  7. Your dog will be relaxed in all sorts of situations.

  8. Your dog will be confident in you to deal with things, which will give him confidence.

  9. It helps your dog to understand his place in the pecking order that is your family.

When should I start training?

Whether you have a new 8 week old puppy or and older rescue dog, training can begin slowly from the time you bring your dog home

Should my dog go to puppy classes?

GOOD, well run classes can be of huge benefit in the socialising and training of a puppy and older dog, especially for the first time dog owner. You will be shown the techniques and skills needed to train your puppy. It is up to you to practice these skills in-between classes for your dog to show good progress

How do I know what is a good training class?

A good class will run for a set number of weeks with all the pups of a similar age. There will be a limit on the number of pups in the class and ideally there will be one or more teaching assistants. The training methods will all be reward based. The training will be altered to suit the dogs in the class, one method doesn’t always suit every dog in the class and the instructors should be able to offer alternative ways for you to teach your dog. The instructor will allow you to view and class before you are signed up for the next course. The dogs should be kept busy in class, not waiting in a long line for their turn to practice something. Any play sessions should be under control, with no pups getting bullied or the session turning into a ‘free-for-all’
