With your puppy standing, hold a titbit just above his nose. As he lifts his head and nose to take the treat, move the treat up and back towards his tail.
Keep a tight grip of the titbit, holding it between your thumb and forefinger or wedged beneath your thumb.
As his nose moves up, his bottom should automatically sink towards the floor.
As soon as your puppy sits, say the command "Sit", give him the titbit and some verbal praise. Repeat the word "Sit", stroke him gently and continue to give him praise for as long as he remains sitting.

Well done! A lovely sit! |
If the puppy starts to jump up at you, you are holding the titbit too high.
If he reverses, you are moving the titbit too quickly, or it is being held too far back towards his tail.
If he tires of sitting and independantly decides to stand up, stop all praise at once.
If he tries to mug you for the titbit, always wedge it beneath your thumb
SIT means SIT
DOWN means lie down flat on the floor
Do not join them up into "Sit Down" or you will cause great confusion
