Grooming is an excellent way to develop a good bond with your puppy. It will also teach him to accept being handled which is important for when he goes to the vets or to have a hair cut at the groomer's.
It is very important that your puppy gets used to being brushed and combed from the start. Be firm but gentle so the puppy learns to stand still and have a game or treat ready for when YOU not the puppy have finished. Once a day on a puppy is ideal but twice a week is acceptable providing it is done thoroughly and all the knots and bits of garden are removed. Ask your breeder what brushes you will need for your type of dog.
If your puppy is a coated breed he will be ready for his first trim by about 5 months. Pick your groomer carefully. You will want to find a groomer who will be kind to your puppy and introduce all the stages in a careful manner. A quieter salon is better, they will have extra time to give to your puppy and he will not be overfaced with a lot of noise and strange dogs in close proximity. Ask around at your vets, park etc for salons they would recommend - vets will soon hear about salons that damage dogs in some way.
If your puppy gets a matted coat before you take him to be groomed, expect the groomer to say they will shave the puppy right to the skin. The puppy may not look nice afterwards BUT it is the kindest thing, the coat will grow back. Make sure you ask the groomer how to avoid this happening again.
