Plants known to be toxic to dogs

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - please read

Dogs & Co has endeavoured to compile a comprehensive list of plants known to be toxic to dogs.  However, we assume no liability for the content of this list.  While we have tried to be accurate, this is in no way a complete list of all poisonous/toxic plants.  It is intended only as a guide.

If you believe that your dog may have eaten or come into contact with any of these plants, or indeed any plant not on the list and is showing any kind of reaction, it is vitally important that you contact your vet as soon as possible for advice and treatment. If your dog is showing a bad reaction, transport him to the vet immediately and get someone to telephone ahead, giving details of his condition and your suspicions.

Plants which can be potentially fatal are highlighted in red, whilst plants that can cause serious problems are highlighted in purple.

Small pebbles puppies, in particular, like to pick up small stones to chew on.  These can damage the dog's teeth, but worse, some dogs will swallow them and be unable to pass them out the other end.  This could result in an expensive operation, or death if a blockage occurs.
Water dogs like to drink out of containers with rainwater in, or even out of the fish pond.  Watch this in the summertime, as blue green algae is toxic.
Fish ponds your dog will fall in the pond at some point (they don't know they can't walk on water!!).  If the pond doesn't have an easy escape route, think about fencing off the area.
Snails can carry a parasite that causes lungworm in dog's if the snail is eaten.
Garden chemicals use common sense when using these.  Keep to areas that the dog has no access to.
Sticks try to discourage your pup or dog from chewing sticks.  They could either get into the habit of playing with them (and fetch with a stick can cause nasty throat injuries), or start to eat them and they aren't a good source of fibre!!  Some sticks can also be extremely toxic.
Cat faeces Nearly every dog will try to eat cat poo at some point.  Apart from being disgusting (according to us humans anyway), it can also be dangerous for the dog.  Sometimes cat faeces can contain a parasite that can cause lungworm (particularly from an unwormed cat).
